Time: 8:00 p.m.

Opening of the 29th Summer Olympic in Beijing, China. 8 is a lucky number among the chinese and they're quite lucky when they won the bidding (after several denials) in hosting the 2008 olympic.

BIRD'S NEST - SIGNATURE STADIUM OF THE BEIJING OLYMPIC

The National Stadium also known as the Bird's Nest, lit up at night during rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The stadium seats 91,000, boasts a floor space of 258,000 sq meters, and will host both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as all track and field events and the soccer final.

The large steel skeleton of the project weighs 42,000 tons, with the roof and the hanging parts around it accounting for 11,200 tons. The stadium has taken nearly three years to be built

The "fuwa" are Beijing's Olympic mascots. The five mascots, which resemble cuddly teddy bears, represented four of China's most popular animals -- the fish, the panda, the Tibetan antelope and the swallow -- as well as the Olympic flame.

"Fuwa" is a Chinese word that translates as blessed or happy children. The mascots were intended to symbolize China's welcome to the children of the world for the Games, according to the Olympic organizing committee.

Side Note:

We, Filipinos considered the no. 8 as unlucky number. Our folks called this number as "pilipit' and they keep on advising to refrain from business, marriages, travels etc..
On that no. 8 supertition...Tsino are optimistic while the Pinoy is pessimistic.

Honestly I don't believe that number has something to do with luck and bad luck.

But I'm still hoping that our athletes will compete well and bring home the medals.

i hope we'll have many athletes who'll excel in the Beijing Olympics...after all they're our nation's pride.

I agree with your reaction on the superstition about "8".

our real luck depends on us, regardless.

I agree that we are a product of the choices we make. For every good thing that happens to us, we deserve the credit. For everything bad that happens to us, we have no one but ourselves to blame.

I hope to remain neutral between the tsino and the Pinoy. I believe 8 is just a number. You are a good writer. i enjoy your blog.

oh yes, they really had grand preparations. i was in beijing 6 months total in 2000 when they bid for the 2008 olympics. imagine, at the height of summer when the grass was dry, the chinese spry painted the grass green in time for the coming of the evaluating committee. they had to dress up beijing, swept the streets with large sweeping trucks, spruced up the streets and parks with gigantic flower vases, and made the people memorize 1 english word per week, taxi drivers and sales people included.

so, i could just imagine what they put up after 8 years--the grandeur that was in the opening night, and all the magnificent structures.

as to 888, for me, it is just sexy combination of numbers.

keith,
I'm a good writer you must be mistaken, but thank you ang sarap ng pakiramdam kapag napupuri ka.

bbr,
grabe pala talaga yung ginawa nila para manalo lang sa bidding ha. In my opinion sa kanila talaga nakatakda itong 2008 olympic and expected ko na ring bongang-bonga ang opening nila at sana hanggang closing ceremony.
thanks for the info.

I had no idea Filipinos considered the no. 8 as unlucky. Very interesting.
